By Ernst: Advent exhorted us to be quiet and wait in wonder for the miracle of Christmas. We were pushed in; literally into our homes and figuratively into our hearts. During this dark period when the nights became even shorter, we lit candles.

But why? What can we experience within our hearts? And what light is lit at Christmas? That is the other side or deeper meaning of Christmas. I want to tell you more about that, but first something about the background of Christmas.

In pre-Christian times, Christmas was already celebrated in our region. The Germans celebrated the Yule festival when the sun child ‘Widar’ was born from the primordial virgin mother. Christmas was the festival of sunshine; a celebration of hope, trust and faith. In nature the victory of the sun over the darkness of winter was a fact. The Romans celebrated the Birthday of the Unconquered Sun on December 25. It is therefore not surprising that the birth of Jesus has been placed by the church on December 24. Old and new customs are connected and made it easier for people from the early days to transition to the Christian faith. The specialness of the solstice was thus partly preserved.

December is the darkest time of year. Short days and long nights. At Christmas we arrive at the point of silence. The days and nights remain briefly the same length (the 12 holy nights). Then the days become longer and the nights shorter. The earth has turned in on itself, seems barren and empty. In summer the earth has absorbed the sun, everything spiritual, all life forces. In winter the fields look bare and plowed. Mother Earth is an introverted being, expecting the sun child. Advent gives us the opportunity to become silent; to be in silent expectation of the child. When the sun child is born, life in the earth can prepare to germinate. Not only the earth can germinate, but also our light forces, plans and ideas.

The word Christmas comes from ‘Christusmas’ and refers to the mass that was held in the Roman Catholic Church to celebrate Christ’s birth. The Gospel according to Luke describes the birth of the baby in the stable, the angels, the shepherds, who hear the good news and who find the child Jesus in the manger with Joseph and Mary. This is the well-known story. But the Gospel of Matthew describes the visit of the three kings. They saw in the stars that a royal child would be born and went looking for the child. This Christ child is different, richer and more spiritual than the poor carpenter’s child. If you compare Matthew and Luke, you can notice that they are about two different children. This is discussed more often in the Christian community and written about in anthroposophy. Nowadays a third child is mentioned and that is the Light Being. This Being of Light is what the archangels and ascended masters speak of in their spiritual discourses. Then we have the aforementioned Germanic sun child and our Ego. They are already forming into one; the Christ being.

Christmas begins on December 25 with a holy night, followed by 12 holy nights, which connect Christmas with the Epiphany. Then the Russian Orthodox Church celebrates Christmas (so 13 days later than us). In the middle of this period of holy nights, falls the New Year’s celebration, which gives an impetus to renew us. But we celebrate Christmas night when the sun has already passed its lowest point (21-12). There are Christmas trees in almost all houses, a tradition that dates back to 1850, and in the evening, we burn candles. Christmas is the great festival of lights and that requires further explanation.

Take a look around you during Christmas. Thousands of lights are on in gardens and houses and some lights flicker on and off. The lights in the outside world are excessive. With all the Christmas stress, fear and radiant fake lights, the darkness tries to take us away from our inner peace and silence, so that the birth of light cannot take place in our hearts; it wants to keep our frequency and consciousness low. The birth of light, also known as Christianity or the connection with source, in our hearts is the mystery of Christmas. We thereby increase our frequency. In these times there is a strong need for inner peace, love and light among so many people (and especially children). Fortunately, the forces of light and frequency on Earth have become stronger in recent years. We can ignite the light through our consciousness. I find that birth a great mystery every year and I notice that it is becoming easier. I wish you that this Christmas season you will find the peace and quiet to feel and keep that inner Christ child with all its luminosity in your heart. We are all a piece of divinity or Light and that connection makes us one.
