By Ernst: It has struck me lately that many people live in fear of all kinds of things. Everyone is anxious sometimes, but what exactly is anxiety and what does it do to us? Fear is a normal response, to a dangerous situation. Your body prepares to flee or fight and warns you.
But fear can also cause a gnawing and often painful feeling, an uneasy feeling. It often warns you of a danger, but it can also be that one has experienced a frightening event in the past and has not processed it properly, so that it is experienced again and again. You speak of an anxiety disorder when fear and panic dominate your life. Various anxiety disorders can be distinguished. For example, anxiety can be accompanied by physical reactions, such as dizziness, but also by sweating and trembling.
It is not clear why one person suffers more from anxiety than another. It is thought that the predisposition to anxiety may be hereditary. The way people are raised also influences the way people deal with anxiety. Sometimes someone can experience so much fear that they suffer from an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorder is the collective name for different types of fears.
SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF ANXIETY:
Worrying a lot about things that might happen, even though there is no clear reason for this.
Avoiding difficult or confrontational situations, so closing yourself off from them.
Often think back to unpleasant things you have experienced, not knowing any inner peace.
Being sad for a long time, anxious and tense, feeling stressed.
Suffering from physical complaints, such as: palpitations and trembling.
Being afraid of losing control over and in situations and therefore constantly repeating certain actions.
I get a lot of different questions related to love. And just as often I come to the conclusion that fear is the basis of this infatuation. Fear of losing your partner. But also fear of harming the other person, or of being harmed yourself, so one fear fuels the other.
People often think that they have control over the other person and therefore do not want to lose that, but that is based on fear and emotions, not on the basis of love and trust. In love, it is important that you talk clearly to your partner, by making it clear to your partner what you feel, and by being open and honest. Then you can prevent many fears.
WHAT DIFFERENT TYPES OF FEAR ARE THERE?
A panic disorder
This is an attack of recurring, overwhelming anxiety. They are often short unexpected anxiety attacks. For example, you may experience chest pain, palpitations, nausea or shortness of breath. These symptoms are harmless and are the result of incorrect breathing. The person to whom this happens thinks they are having a heart attack and is often very afraid of dying.
A phobia
Is the fear of a specific thing or situation or animals. Just think of people who have a panicky fear of spiders or clowns, or a fear of the dentist. One can also suffer from social phobia. In this case, someone may be afraid to visit someone else and therefore not go. Someone may also have a fear of going out onto a public street.
A generalized anxiety
With generalized anxiety you feel a constant fear that dominates your life. In this case you are constantly worrying and tense and there is actually no reason for it at all. Yet people are extremely afraid that something terrible will happen and this often also involves physical complaints, such as difficulty falling asleep, a lot of back pain or headaches and being easily startled.
PTSD (PostTraumatic Stress Disorder)
PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) is also an anxiety disorder. The people who suffer from this can be divided into three groups. People may suffer from re-experiencing a trauma and/or unpleasant event, or want to avoid things or they constantly suffer from tension.
The obsessive-compulsive disorder
And then we have obsessive-compulsive disorder, which is characterized by anxiety-provoking thoughts and compulsions. Compulsive actions can ensure that anxious thoughts are suppressed. Just think about fear of contamination and that makes you keep washing your hands compulsively.
Some other forms of anxiety include: Fear of Commitment, Fear of Separation, Fear of Flying, Fear of Failure, etc. Many people have suffered from an anxiety disorder in their lives. Studies have shown that this is more common in women than in men.
Possible treatments include conversations with care providers, behavioral therapy and sometimes medication, but what helps with many fears is:
Live a regular life. For example, by getting up, eating and going to work at fixed times.
Find enough relaxation.
Take good care of yourself by resting and sleeping.
Make sure you are and stay active. So, make sure you get the necessary exercise.
Continue to do everything as much as possible, even the things that you find anxious. By continuing to do those things, one learns to deal with the tension.
