By Rani: The main goal of meditation is to become fully present, or “current.” One effective way to achieve this state is through guided thought and imagination, which eventually leads to a state of silence and mental stillness.
It may seem counterintuitive, but engaging your thoughts can actually help you reach a place of no thoughts at all. Many people find it difficult to think about nothing, but here are some exercises to help you get there.
Exercise 1: Familiar Content
Start by putting on something familiar on your TV, tablet, or phone—something you’ve seen before. This familiarity prevents the content from generating new thoughts, allowing your mind to stay quiet. Simply let the show or movie play, focusing softly on the screen. Let your thoughts gradually fade away as the familiar content plays in the background. Visualize your happy place, and eventually, let your mind become empty.
Exercise 2: Relaxation Through Sensory Focus
Another method to become present is by engaging with something that naturally relaxes your mind, such as holding a crystal or gazing into a flame. It could also be listening to ASMR or watching someone play video games—anything that helps you unwind. The goal is to ease your mind into a state of calm.
Exercise 3: The Power of Fire
Light a candle or, if possible, a bonfire. Either option works. Play some soft music to set the mood. You can light several candles or focus on a fireplace or bonfire. Begin by staring into the flames, allowing your mind to wander as you detect patterns or images in the fire. Let yourself drift into a meditative state without speaking. Over time, you may find the flames telling you a story or revealing insights, sometimes even offering a sense of prophecy.
Exercise 4: Mirror and Screen Gazing
This same meditative practice can be applied to other objects, such as staring at your reflection in a mirror, observing a painting, or gazing at a TV or phone screen. The key is to imagine and then transition to a space of nothingness. Once you reach this space, you are fully present.
Incorporating Mindfulness Into Your Daily Routine
I recommend integrating these practices into your daily routine, aiming for a few sessions each day. This regular practice will help you become more self-aware throughout the day. When you reach a state of mental stillness, it allows you to fully observe your environment and experience it in its entirety. Although the background may blur out, this helps you focus all your energy on observing everything at once.
Experiencing Oneness With the Present Moment
Achieving this state of being fully present is akin to experiencing a moment with the divine. In this moment, you are open to receiving deep insights about yourself, your surroundings, and even your future. Epiphanies often come when your mind is most silent, which is why it’s crucial to cultivate self-awareness daily. When you are fully present, you are most in tune not only with your surroundings but also with yourself.
