The Healing Practice of Reiki

The Healing Practice of Reik

Reiki is a Japanese technique during which a practitioner removes blocks to energy so that it can flow naturally throughout the body. The word “Reiki” is a combination of rei and ki – universal life energy. Reiki promotes stress reduction and healing.

Human beings experience emotional, physical and spiritual stresses every day. Reiki practitioners address the resulting imbalances by a laying-on of hands healing process. The practitioner is actually a vessel through which the healing energies flow into the recipient’s body.

Some people incorrectly assume that Reiki is a religion; but, it has no basis in any religious doctrine. The recipient does not need to have religious beliefs to be effective. Instead, it is a spiritual practice for growth and empowerment that anyone can benefit from.

A Reiki Healing Session

Reiki practitioners aim to create a soothing environment. Some practitioners dim the lights and play meditative music, while others prefer to work in total silence. When you arrive for a session, the practitioner will ask you to lie down on a bed, couch or massage table. The only thing you need to remove are your shoes. Wear loose clothing.

The practitioner will place his hands lightly over your body, pausing for several minutes between movements. Each body part receives the same amount of attention. You don’t need to direct the flow of energy, as it goes exactly where to go. However, it is possible to open a linear pathway to the most needed area through intention.

It is normal to feel any of the following:

•Buzzing
•Tingling
•Itchiness
•Electrical sparks
•Drowsiness
•Heat or coolness
•Throbbing
•Numbness

There are both traditional and non-traditional Reiki practitioners. Traditional Reiki follows the teachings of Dr. Usui, founder of the Usui system. Reiki practitioners advertise in New Age bookstores, yoga studios and online. Many clients find practitioners from word of mouth.

The fastest way to become a Reiki practitioner is by learning from a Reiki Master who transfers the healing techniques through an attunement process. The student and Reiki Master develop a special link as the process opens up the crown, heart and palm chakras. It is possible to experience psychic phenomena during the attunement process, such as increased awareness and the opening of the third eye.

There are three levels of Reiki. Students typically complete Levels I or II over the course of an 8 hour period. There are 16-hour combined Level I and II classes that last a full weekend. Level III involves more comprehensive instruction. Although it only takes one Reiki attunement to be “attuned” to that level, people can strengthen the benefits of that level with multiple attunements, including:

•Emotional healing
•Increased psychic sensitivity
•Mental clarity
•Higher consciousness

The cost of Reiki sessions and Reiki attunements varies. Many Reiki centers offer reasonable fees. Training to become a Reiki Master does not mean you must teach. You may want to complete the training solely for your own emotional, physical and spiritual growth.
